What dangers does Nuclear energy pose for the people of south Durban and South Africa...

WHAT DANGERS DOES  THE  NUCLEAR ENERGY POSE FOR THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH DURBAN & SOUTH AFRICA

Due to the current energy crisis South Africa is faced with, the Department of Energy has confirmed its ambition to build 6 – 8 Nuclear power plants along the South African coastlines. One proposed location is the Durban Old International Airport due to the industrial energy demand and large volumes of water needed for cooling the plant.

This deadly proposed development will impact on the future generations the most. It’s not sustainable, extremely expensive, very toxic and will cause catastrophic accidents. The proposed location is within explosives, chemicals, people, etc.  The south Durban AKA ‘Cancer Valley’ already has so many industries and pollution, with our last green lung (Filter) destroyed, imagine what will happen when we have the Nuclear power plant here as well.  What about the toxic waste that remains toxic for thousands of years?

This will not solve our current energy problem because it will take a minimum of ten years to build this plant. We have also witnessed disastrous accidents such as the Three Miles Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima. Many countries are shifting away from this disastrous form of energy to cleaner, cheaper and sustainable energy.

Earthlife Africa and the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) invite you to a Nuclear energy seminar on the 3rd September 2015 at the Austerville Community Hall at 5pmWe will be having Vladimir Slavyak as the key speaker. Vladimir is a senior lecturer on Environmental Policy at the Russian National Research University and is also a part of a Russian organisation called Eco Defence. He has been campaigning against nuclear energy for 25 years. He is also the author of ‘From Hiroshima to Fukushima’ which chronicles the 2011 Japanese nuclear catastrophe at Fukushima Daiichi and describes the Russian nuclear industry's lack of preparedness for similar accidents. He has also written over 300 articles on environmental and energy issues, which have been published in both the Russian and international media.

The future lays in our hands…. Let’s all fight against this noxious proposed development that will cripple our communities and country.
