Dear All
With the close proximity to
the Port of Durban it is no surprise that the Logistics business is thriving in
the South Durban Basin. Even though this industry contributes greatly to our
country’s economy and growth, it brings with it associated challenges and
issues related to safety, infrastructure and service delivery.
The impact on areas such as
Clairwood, Jacobs, Merebank, Wentworth and Isipingo has been profound with an
outcry from local communities to address the impact on their daily lives.
Some of the issues being
raised by the communities that negatively impact their lives include the
illegal parking on roads, blocking of drive ways parking on pavements resulting
in the endangering of pedestrians and school learners lives; the noise and
emission levels from the air brakes and exhaust of the trucks are creating
sleepless nights and health problems to the residents. Furthermore, it is
believed that the trucking depots are close to taverns, bottle stores and these
facilities are sometimes open late at night. It has also been noted that the
trucks are not maintained on a regular basis and truck drivers have to drive
long distances, hence endangering the lives of drivers and other road users.
In an effort to rid our roads
of truck accidents, damage of our city infrastructure, roads, pavements and
ultimately deaths; the SDB -ABM would like to invite you as key stakeholders,
including our logistic industry representatives to a meeting. This meeting will
assist in developing an integrative approach towards the goal of achieving
sustainable solutions to address this problem at hand.
The meeting is scheduled as
